Hi everybody,
I was wondering if someone could provide me with some information on the American forces fighting during the wars of the 1790s in western Ohio, particularly the regulars. I understand there really wasn't a standing U.S. Army under the Articles of Confederation (the new states wouldn't stop squabbling long enough to put one together), and that the armies led by both St. Clair and Wayne were really almost ad hoc "legions" assembled for the specific task at hand (so was Harmer's, for that matter, although on a smaller scale). Those facts are widely distributed and easy to find. I'm really more interested in exactly how the forces were structured and equipped--officer chain of command, division of units, individual soldiers' personal arms, uniform and gear, etc. Is it safe to assume that it would be the same as the Continental Army during the Revolution? Then in turn, would that be similar to essentially any European army of the day, particularly the British?
Sgt. Munro, you seem to be very much on top of your game in terms of the Europeans in the region at the time, so if you don't mind I'd like to point this question vaguely in your direction, but of course anyone with useful input is appreciated.
Thank you in advance. Jon
