Hands-on History Saturdays at Fort Meigs
Join the staff at Fort Meigs every Saturday in the month of September for Hands-on History Saturday. War of 1812 soldiers and civilians offer activities and demonstrations from Noon to 3 PM with your paid admission. Each weekend offers different activities and no reservations are required.
September 3, 2005 – “Arming the Army”- See how War of 1812 soldiers fired their muskets using cartridges, then try your hand at rolling a cartridge yourself. The soldiers use black powder, but you get to make your cartridge out of candy and take it home for a tasty treat. This program runs from Noon - 3pm.
September 10, 2005- Join the “Mini-Militia”- Join the "mini-militia" and learn how troops were drilled. Learn how to drill and march with War of 1812 soldiers. The weapons are wood but the fun is real! The program runs from Noon - 3pm. Programs run every half-hour.
September 17, 2005- “1812 Camp Life”- Soldiers did more than fight in the War of 1812. Help us with camp chores and learn about the life of a soldier or camp follower during the War of 1812. Help us set up tents, do laundry and other camp chores. The program runs from Noon to 3pm.
September 24, 2005- Join the “Mini-Artillery”- Ever wonder what it takes to shoot a big cannon? Now you can find out. Help drill on a cannon and then stand back while the fort soldiers fire one of the big guns! The program runs from Noon to 3pm.
Fort Meigs is open Wednesday through Saturday from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm and Sundays Noon to 5:00 pm. Admission is $7- Adults; $3- Students; Free- Five and under
Fort Meigs, one of 60 Ohio Historical Society sites, is located one mile west of Perrysburg, Ohio on State Route 65.
