I was sent a story about a Huron Indian from Michigan being able to out run a man on a horse to the next town. He went through the field while the man on the horse took the road. I always wondered how the communication system work so well by using Indian Runners to deliver messages in time of war, from one tribe to another. The following has a great piece on this and tell of the great distances they were able to travel. www.ultrarunning.com/ultra/features/world/chapter-i-in-the-beginnin.shtml

The runner system of communication was more widespread than is generally thought. In the GEORGE ROGERS CLARK PAPERS, I have found mentions of some of the Shawnee and Wyandot runners by name.
