I have been working on some sketches for a painting of the Gamwing or Big House Ceremony of the Delawares. The Big House of Netawatwees at Newcomerstown here in Ohio has been described in the old journals. It must have been a very emotional ceremony for the whole tribe. It's a shame that most of the older Delawares are gone now that participated in the last ceremony. I hope some of the new generation will be inspired to revive it.
In my research, I was recommended a very good book on the subject. "Voices from the Delaware Big House Ceremony", edited by Robert S. Grumet. It's a very good read and has illustration of the special drums etc. and some paintings by Ernest Spybuck which are excellent.
