After the trails through Indian Country were opened by the Indian traders and their pack horse strings, they were widened for the Conestoga Wagons to bring supplies to the settlements. They were used to supply the outpost and then returning with the furs etc. to the East. I found a neat story about one of the wagons at www.bchistory.org/beavercounty/beavercountytopical/transportation/ConestogaMW97.html that you might enjoy reading about the red, white and blue in the early days of our country.
