A new book on the history of Kentucky and the Ohio Indian Wars is out. The Hunters of Kentucky by historian Ted Franklin Belue chronicles the history of the Bluegrass state from its early beginings as an Indian hunting ground known as 'Kenta-Ke' , its first explorations by now-legendary hunters like Daniel Boone, Simon Kenton, and John Findlay, and the role it played during the Revolution and the Ohio Wars as the Ohio tribes, especially the Shawnee, fought to keep white settlers out of the trans-Appalachian west. In retaliation, the Kentuckians launched punishing reprisals against the Shawnee, Wyandot, and Delaware towns in Ohio. While this book deals primarily with the history of Kentucky and its first explorers, hunters, and settlers, that history is inexorably linked to the story of the Ohio Indians and the vicious wars that were fought over this dark and bloody ground.
